Second Chances [1/?]

Title: Second chances [1/?]
Pairing: KyuMin, other pairings
Rating: PG-13
Genre: angst, romance, humor
Warnings: Character Death
Summary: When he died, Kyuhyun lost the will to live. Will he find it again after they're given a second chance?

Kyuhyun dragged himself out of bed, eyes bloodshot and hair tousled. He knew he looked like he'd been to hell and dragged back, but he frankly didn't care. He allowed himself to level a steady gaze at the empty bed across his, but that didn't help anything. He still didn't have any reason to get up every morning. No sunshine for his day, no motivation, no pink plush bunnies and underwear hanging around bedposts. He flopped back to the bed, willing himself to go back to sleep. Life just wasn't worth living without him.

It wasn't supposed to be like this.

He was supposed to be here with Kyuhyun, waking him up at ungodly hours in the morning so that they could see the sunrise, cooking him strawberry pancakes and generally making a mess of the kitchen and upsetting Ryeowook. They should've been together in the practice room as he taught Kyuhyun the dance routine for Miinah, spending as much time together as they could. He should be here to pull Kyuhyun away from his Starcraft games late at night and to poke him awake in the middle of sleep to tell him to stop snoring.

But he wasn't here.

Kyuhyun buried his head in his pillows.

Kyuhyun didn’t answer, keeping his eyes on the screen.

“Aish.” he cursed lightly under his breath at how incredibly stupid all his team mates where.

“I was wondering if you could go with me to the department store around the corner, we’re out of strawberry milk and…”

“Go on your own.” Kyuhyun grumbled, not even sparing the other a glance. The enemy was beginning to advance, he couldn’t lose this game.

“Okay then.” he’d pouted, and then he walked out of the door.

He stood in front of his closet, wondering whether he should wear the black tie or the red one, but he decided that it didn’t matter at all and he just grabbed the one closest to him and turned to the mirror so he could tie it on properly.

He really shouldn’t have.

There, arranged by caring hands on the mirrors frame, were the pictures that they’d taken when they last went to a theme park. They’d been disguised then. But once they’d gotten in the photo booth they had removed their caps and sunglasses and they’d had the time of their lives doing these few pictures. The fans soon found out who they were though, and they were mobbed, and they also had to endure a round of scolding from both Eeteuk and Kangin. But one look at the other's smile and Kyuhyun could confidently say that it was worth all the trouble it had cost.

Kyuhyun could feel his eyes begin to moisten as he tried to absorb every feature of the face that would never be this lively again; that bright smile, those cupid-bow lips, those large innocent eyes and that trademark peace sign.

All gone.

“Is this Cho Kyuhyun?”

“I’m sorry Mr. Cho. We found your number in the emergency contact information of a boy named Lee Sungmin…”

Kyuhyun was the last one ready. All the other members were already gathered around the black SUVs they were taking. Eeteuk was silently herding the members into the cars even when his face was drawn out and his eyes puffy from crying so much. Nobody spoke as they got loaded into the cars, there were no words to be spoken.

Soon, the car was moving and all that was heard was the gentle rumbling of the engine. That, and the faint sniffles as Eunhyuk silently cried on Donghae’s shoulder.

Kyuhyun wished he wouldn’t. He might begin to cry too.

Hit-and-Run accident!

The papers all proclaimed, front-page. The news practically flew and before long, the entire world knew.

‘Lee Sungmin of Super Junior.’

‘it was in a car accident’

'the driver ran way.’

‘he just went out to buy milk’

Kyuhyun wished he could block out all of this as he went through everyday life. He tried to forget that someone had gone. He just went on vacation, he said in his head. But everywhere he looked there were reminders that it really had happened.

News reports.

Reporters pounding on his front door.

All of them demanded answers, thoughts and messages to the public, when all that Kyuhyun could think as he gathered all of Sungmin’s stuffed toys in his arms and cradled them to his chest as if it would transform into Sungmin and hug him back was the one question that nagged him the most.

“Are you alright, Kyuhyun?”

Eeteuk hovered over Kyuhyun as they stepped out of the car. On any other day, Kyuhyun would have had a snarky reply on his arsenal, but the frost-white coffin at the end of the aisle was an effective distraction.

“I’m fine.” he muttered, eyes never leaving the small coffin just across from him.

Behind him, Ryeowook had spotted the coffin and he bursts out into loud inconsolable tears.

“I’m just fine.’’ he said again trying to convince himself that what he was saying was true. Eeteuk left to comfort Ryeowook and Kyuhyun was thankful.

His eyes began to glaze over.

‘What do you want to do after ten years, Kyu?” Sungmin asked suddenly as they drove home after practice.

“I don’t know, Minnie. Maybe I’ll still be singing. How about you?”

“I want to get a house in the country. Somewhere peaceful and beautiful.” he grinned, closing his eyes as he tried to imagine what life there would be.

“You’re such a sap.”

Sungmin pouted.

“Awww, but Kyu. Don’t you think it would be nice? After all these years we’ll get to rest in a pretty place with few people. We’ll be able to watch sunsets, eat sweet pumpkins and take walks out and own a big dog and sell puppies!”

“We?” Kyuhyun asked, curious at the use of the pronoun.

“I’m taking you with me of course!” Sungmin declared.

Kyuhyun smiled, his heart unwilling giving way to the other boy. He ruffled Sungmins hair.

“Of course.”

The service passed on quickly for Kyuhyun. When the time came for everybody to go over to the coffin and say some last words he didn’t go. He just tuned everything out as he stared straight ahead, at the coffin where Sungmin lay.

Wake up.

He thought desperately in his head. But he knew it wasn’t going to happen. You could only collect extra lives and press start over when you play games. This wasn’t a game. There was no replaying a level.

What was gone now, was gone forever.

‘Promise you’ll never leave me, Kyu?’

“Yeah.” Kyuhyun muttered distractedly

“Pinky swear?” Sungmin said, lifting his pinky in the air and almost poking Kyuhyun in the eye.

“Yeah.” Kyuhyun said, removing one hand from his keyboard for a moment to twine his little finger around Sungmin's before returning to his game.

“But you weren’t even looking at me when you did that!” Sungmin whined.

“You know I still mean it, Min.”

Kyuhyun stumbled into their, no, HIS, room after the burial. He felt wrung out, but he hadn’t even cried a single tear yet, even though everybody had. He grabbed blindly at his tie and tore it off, throwing it into a corner before he dropped down on his bed. A voice at the back of his told him that Sungmin wouldn’t like him littering. Kyuhyun ignored it. Sungmin wasn’t here to scold him about it anyway.

Kyuhyun let out a dry sob.

He didn’t know how he’d ended up sleeping in Sungmin’s bed, wrapped up in the pink blankets and surrounded by the bazillions of stuff toys that the other left around. Maybe it was because he missed Sungmin’s scent too much. Maybe he wanted to be surrounded by the last things that Min had touched before he’d walked out of Kyuhyun’s life forever. Kyuhyun’s entire face felt raw.

He cried while he slept.

He curled up into a ball in Sungmin's bed and tried to imagine Sungmin there with him, wrapped around him, soft breath wafting over his cheek as the older male breathed softly in his sleep. Eyes fluttering briefly as his eyes darted under the lids because of some dream about chasing butterflies or whatever else it was that Sungmin would dream about. The warm vanilla scent, lingered in the sheets, but it would be gone soon, and Kyuhyun tried to savor it while it remained.

He didn’t know how long he’d been like that. Sungmin’s pink bunny in his arms with his nose buried in its soft head, his eyes closed as tears welled up in his eyes but didn’t quite fall. He didn’t move when he heard the door open and close, or when the footsteps led to where he lay curled up under the covers. He expected it to just be Eeteuk, checking on him because his motherly instincts as the eldest wouldn’t leave him alone. But it wasn’t Eeteuk who spoke close to Kyuhyun’s ear in a gentle yet teasing voice. Instead, it was a voice Kyuhyun thought he’d never hear ever again.

“Kyu? I thought you didn’t like Mr. Wibbles?”

This was beautifully written. You captured the grieving process perfectly - I know this because I did this exact same thing after my dad died.
I actually started crying when I read the part about Kyuhyun in Sungmin's bed. I don't usually cry at fics, but this was just so beautiful and I wanted you to know how much it affected me.
Very well done, I am looking forward to the next part!
